This subject aims at applying a multimodal approach to the uses of written English by exploring the integration of this mode of communication with other resources. The course adopts, then, this discourse analysis approach, as an emerging paradigm which extends the study of written language per se in combination with other semiotic resources, such as fixed and moving images, gesture, music and sound.
Since MDA uses texts to explore, illustrate or apply general issues in multimodal studies, we will work with an ample corpus to develop proficiency in reading different sign systems and to practise several types of discursive transfers. Together with this, students will also learn about the Anglo-American cultural contexts in which texts are constructed.
