This subject (i.e. “English Applied Linguistics: An Introduction” (EA0914)) focuses on the specific aspects related to the learning and teaching of second/foreign languages. First, a brief introduction to the extensive and interdisciplinary nature of the field of applied linguistics will be given (Unit 1). Then, we will examine the insights that linguistic, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic research has provided on both first language acquisition (Unit 2) and second/foreign language learning (Unit 3). Finally, the individual learner characteristics that account for variability in second/foreign language success will be analysed (Unit 4).
This subject is linked to the subject “Applied Linguistics in English Language Teaching and Learning” (EA0925) and “Linguistics and English Language Teaching Methodology” (EA0936), both taught in the third year.
